It is amazing how little people know of designers with names other than Fendi, Gucci, Burberry, Versace, Louis Vuitton, e.t.c. Last month, I mentioned to a friend that I would like to own a Ferragamo shoe I saw at Bloomingdales. I was somewhat confused when he responded, “Ferragamo, that’s a designer?” Dude, are you serious? Which Nigerian has not heard of Ferragamo? All thanks to Michelle Obama for that 2013 public endorsement of Jason Wu. If not for those two fabulous dresses FLOTUS wore to her husband’s Inaugural Ball in 2013, many will still be clueless as to who Jason Wu is.
Meet Charles Youseff, 34. A graduate of Parsons and Central Saint Martin’s. This New York designer brings a spirit of playfulness to stark graphic minimalism (Elle August 2015). In the designer’s words, “My aesthetic is Calvin Klein and Narciso Rodriguez with a drop of Gareth”. Referring to three fashion houses – two minimalists (Calvin Klein and Narciso Rodriquez) and a bit more outré (Gareth Pugh).
Charles Youseff is one to watch. He creates beautifully constructed clothes for the sophisticated woman with an edge. His Fall 2015 collection is so right up my alley. They are elegant, minimalistic and creative. The architectural and geometric elements of his ready-to wear pieces are definitely appealing. He promised every season will always have some sort of architectural shape exploration and I’m looking forwarding to seeing them. My favorite piece is the black organza wrap dress with zig zag edges. It is inventively super cute! The look can be recreated with the right fabric and a skillful seamstress.
