Shopping for fabrics is one of my favorite things to do. I found this cotton fabric for $0.99 per yard while visiting G Street Fabrics four years ago. I knew I had to have it especially at that price so I bought ten yards even though I had no idea what I would create with it. I am not a fan of cotton but this one seems to have been woven from a very good quality fiber. Also, I love that the fabric is more on a heavier side which didn’t make it look cheap.
The fabric sat for years until I decided to take it with me on my travel to Nigeria last year to see if I could find a fantastic tailor to make something cute with it. Finding styles to make is not a problem but finding a credible and talented tailor or seamstress that is affordable and pays attention to details had always been the problem.
During my Nigeria visit, I found Bunmi who came to my hotel to take my measurement. She took my fabric with her and a week later I sent her this cute and simple style by Yulia Prokhorova to replicate.
I always provide styles whether copied from other designers or created by me as I do not want surprises I wouldn’t like. Every single dress or skirt Bunmi had made for me fits like a glove and the sowing is really good. The only thing I would change about this dress is to add a liner. I wish I had told Bunmi I always prefer my dresses lined.
If you happen to have plans to sew some outfits while visiting Nigeria, you should give Bunmi a call to make some cute pieces for you.
By the way, you will have to keep ignoring the rubber bands around my wrist. As long as I have those braids in my hair, the band will mistakenly feature in half of my pictures since I always forget to remove it and I am not about to discard pictures I took under pressure. LOL!
